Kırık Simetriler (Broken Symmetries), as its title suggests, is a single-movement work that explores the tension between order and disorder, balance and disruption. Written for a small orchestra (sinfonietta), it is woven from colourful, detailed and continually transforming textures.
The conceptual frame of the piece is “symmetry” — yet these symmetries are usually broken, disturbed or transformed into another form before they are fully established. This appears in the rhythmic structure, in the treatment of motifs and especially in frequent harmonic shifts. By deliberately interrupting recognizable structures, the composer creates a continuous state of expectation and unease in the listener.
Timbrally rich, the work is notable for the detailed writing of instruments such as the harp and the piano. Micro-changes within rhythmic repetitions lead over time to large-scale transformations. Timpani and the wind instruments take on both balancing and directing roles in this process.
Kırık Simetriler draws the listener into a search for balance. That search is often left incomplete, yet it persists within a tense aesthetic whole. By reflecting broken symmetries of the physical world on a musical plane, the work offers a thought-provoking experience on both structural and sensory levels.
