Constructum, from its Latin root, means “that which has been built.” The title summarises the central idea of the work: the step-by-step construction of a musical structure from the smallest cell, its development, transformation and eventual dissolution into new layers of meaning.

The structure is initially built on a tight fabric based on a single rhythmic and melodic cell. This cell is a simple figure of short, equal-timed notes. The chamber orchestra presents this material with a homogeneous, almost mechanical unity, creating in the listener both a stable rhythmic pulse and a mild sense of tension.

Over time, however, this stability gives way to fragmentation. The cell begins to circulate, transform and expand among the various groups of the orchestra. What at first appears uniform slowly divides into different layers. The strings push the limits of the structure with detached articulations, sul ponticello and sharp dynamic shifts. The winds, which begin as accompaniment, later become independent and intensify the internal conflict of the structure.

Piano and harp contribute both structurally and colouristically. The rhythmic accents of the piano at times determine the direction of the whole orchestra, while the harp softens the spaces between the fragmented textures. The timpani function sometimes as a mere trigger interrupting silence, sometimes as the basic rhythmic motor of the structure.

Constructum does not follow a classically sectioned formal plan. Instead it tracks a process-based development. Throughout this process the same musical material is born again and again, reshaped, and at times becomes unrecognisable — yet in every transformation it carries traces of the past.

By the end the listener, though distant from the structure first heard, still senses its echoes, remnants and shadows. This strengthens the central metaphor of the work: every structure transforms with time; the traces of the past are not erased — they only change form.

Constructum is an intellectual and musical experiment on the concepts of structure, process and transformation. Here music is the carrier not only of emotion, but of thought taking shape in time.
