I – Tango
Sonatina is a three-movement work for piano four hands. A continuous dialogue is established between the primo and secondo parts; the two players move on the same keyboard both as a shared body and as two answering voices.
I – Tango
Opening at an Allegro di tango tempo, the first movement builds the dance’s backbone with sharp, molto secco chords. Over the rhythmic skeleton of the secondo, the primo draws decisive (deciso) melodic lines; leggiero touches and sudden dynamic leaps carry both the elegance and the tension of the tango character. In the middle section the tempo slows (Meno mosso); long sustains and quasi campane colours briefly still the dance, before sharp strokes close the movement again.
II – Little Song (Alipaşa Lament)
At an Andante triste tempo, a short song nourished by the Anatolian lament tradition. The melody may be played or sung at will; a cantabile line unfolds over a plain accompaniment. The lines “Arpa ektim biçemedim / Bir düş gördüm seçemedim…” give voice both to an individual mourning and to a shared memory. The movement closes in quiet acceptance.
III – Finale: Joke
The finale, erupting in Presto, is playful and mocking as its title promises. Harsh fff entries continually exchange places with dolce melodic islets; strikes on the body of the piano, quasi percussione and marziale passages blur the boundaries between dance and joke. The work ends with a brief gesture in which the energy gathers and is released at once.
