Chorus Mysticus is a work of about five minutes for solo baritone, mixed choir and string orchestra, set to the lines of the same name that close the second part of Goethe’s Faust. The text speaks of the transitory as mere semblance, of the unattainable becoming reality here, and of the “eternal-feminine” drawing us on high; the music seeks to build this idea of ascent and transformation at the level of sound.

The piece opens with the character con supplica. The solo baritone carries the first lines of the text in a tone close to supplication, from within; the strings form a thin, often muted ground around this voice. The choir enters not yet as a full mass, but as a distant echo, at times almost a whisper. The distance between the individual voice and the collective thus reflects, in musical terms, the tension in the text between “here” and “beyond.”

Toward the middle of the text — where the unattainable becomes event, where the indescribable is done — the texture densifies. Choir lines accumulate; the strings open into wider intervals and a fuller resonance. The solo baritone does not disappear within this expansion: as choir and orchestra rise, his line also changes, yet the personal, pleading aspect of the text is preserved.

In the final quatrain, “Das Ewig-Weibliche / Zieht uns hinan,” the music does not directly imitate the idea of being drawn upward; instead it leaves a sense of direction through the slow rising, dissolving and final fading of the voices. At the close there is neither full triumph nor full extinction: what remains is the echo of the ascent the text promises.

Chorus Mysticus is less a staged “finale” of Goethe’s lines than a meditation that tries, for a short span, to hold within sound the threshold those lines invoke — the line between the transitory and the lasting, between what is said and what cannot be said.

Metin Text

Alles Vergängliche Ist nur ein Gleichnis; Das Unzulängliche, Hier wird’s Ereignis; Das Unbeschreibliche, Hier ist’s getan; Das Ewig-Weibliche Zieht uns hinan.

Geçici olan her şey Yalnızca bir simgedir. Erişilemeyen, Burada hakikate dönüşür. Dile gelmeyen, Burada gerçekleşir. Ebedî olan Dişil, Bizi kendine, yukarıya çeker.

— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Faust II

Alles Vergängliche Ist nur ein Gleichnis; Das Unzulängliche, Hier wird’s Ereignis; Das Unbeschreibliche, Hier ist’s getan; Das Ewig-Weibliche Zieht uns hinan.

All things transitory Are but a semblance; The unattainable, Here it becomes reality; The indescribable, Here it is done; The eternal-feminine Draws us on high.

— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Faust II
